From 22 May to 8 June Sydney-siders will again be enchanted with the lights, music and ideas festival that is Vivid Sydney. This fabulous festival of breathtaking lights, distinctive music and innovative ideas is sure to fire up the imagination and get you out on the streets.

There is something about the shimmer and brilliance of Vivid Sydney that always fills me with childlike awe. It’s like Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks, which at times I’ve dismissed with ‘I’ve seen it all before’ ennui, but then am completely transported by the sheer spectacle of it. Bright lights, big city!

So what started out as a ‘little idea’ to boost winter business has grown to become one of Sydney’s greatest success stories since it began in 2009. This festival of lights, music and ideas rolls out over 18 days and now attracts around 1.5 million visitors.

Sandra Chipchase, CEO of Destination NSW, who owns and manage Vivid Sydney, says the ‘creative vision’ of the festival’s Creative Director, Ignatius Jones, “has contributed enormously to Vivid Sydney being recognised as a world-renowned free public exhibition of outdoor lighting sculptures and installations, cutting-edge contemporary music, a celebration of innovation and ideas and the spectacular illumination of Sydney’s iconic architecture.”

And Vivid Sydney is spreading the light! From the awe-inspiring illumination of the Opera House sails and the Sydney CBD out to the suburbs there is a dazzling display of technological virtuosity, cutting-edge contemporary music programs and ‘talk fests’ that are a celebration of innovation, creativity and community.

Grace Jones, a star attraction on Vivid Sydney’s Music program, will be performing at Carriageworks on May 31 and June 1 – definitely not to be missed. I saw her perform at the Enmore Theatre some years ago and while her music might have a certain sameness, her performance is really quite something and might just quicken your pulse!

Tyler Brulee, arbiter of cool and founder of magazines Wallpaper and Monocle, is a headliner for Vivid Ideas along with Mad Men creator, Matthew Weiner, who may reveal all about Don Draper’s fate!

Vivid Sydney is all about what we do best – show off! But then so much more than that as it brings together some of the most creative and innovative minds to deliver an inspirational festival of light, music and ideas for all of us to engage with.

Hit the streets, see the light!
